Tom Birmingham is a dynamic governance, risk & compliance thought leader experienced in developing and implementing integrated risk management systems for several national and international utility and energy companies. With a successful 30-year career in the energy sector, Tom is currently focused on the energy transition, including standing up risk-based, data-driven, sustainability and climate action programs.
Prior to his retirement from the private sector, Tom was Emera Inc.’s Vice President, Corporate Compliance, where he took a leadership role in designing and implementing Emera’s new integrated corporate compliance risk management system. This position included board-level line-of-sight for its 10 operating affiliates located in Atlantic Canada, New England, Florida, New Mexico, and the Caribbean.
Tom is currently principle at TRB Consulting, Inc., and lends his reputation and expertise in several capacities. Examples include as a consultant and community organizer in the energy, environment, and land use sectors. Among his official duties, Tom consults with energy companies to address emerging reputational and compliance risk driven by climate change. He also Chairs his local Energy Advisory Committee as well as Sustainability and Climate Action Planning Committee, and is Commissioner on his local Conservation Commission.
Tom is LPEC Certified, Co-Chairs the Committee of Chief Risk Officers’ Energy Transition Working Group and is a founding member of the Chief Compliance Officer Roundtable. He has also been a long-term member of the Ethics & Compliance Initiative, Society for Corporate Compliance and Ethics, and the Open Compliance and Ethics Group.
